Mini-Society
As part of our fifth grade social studies, we are studying economics.
Earlier this year, we worked with Junior Achievement and learned how businesses
are organized, how they advertise, and how they operate.
Our first Market Day was a huge success! Each student participated
in a partnership and had a charge card to use for the day. Goods
and services were offered. Students made calendars and snow cones,
operated game booths, and even performed a magic show! As a class,
we decided it would be fun to have another Market Day. This time
students will be given the choice between operating a sole proprietorship
or a partnership.
Since students already experienced purchases with a charge card, it is
time for a taste of real life. Each student will be given the opportunity
to hunt for a job, apply for that job on-line, interview for the job, and
finally get a job. Every week students will be paid $5.00 each in
school money for his or her job if completed efficiently. If jobs
are not completed, employees (students) will receive a violation (ticket).
They will also get a bill each month for table and chair rental as well
as electricity.
The money that students are able to save will be stored in wallets and
locked away for safe keeping until our next Market Day. If they do
not have money saved, they won't be able to shop or do business on Market
Day.
