All Languages

This map shows all the languages spoken in the area. Since villages near the language boundaries often contain speakers of several  languages, the boundaries are drawn somewhat arbitrarily through the bilingual zone. The other language maps show the distribution of single languages with boundaries that include any village in which the language is spoken, therefore, they give a better idea of the distribution of a language. Note that other cultural features such as dress, religion, etc. may, or may not be tied to language. As in many parts of Mexico, one's sense of ethnicity is often linked to the place where one grew up as well as to language.

The language codes are.

In this map one can see that the area contains large areas of native population and that Spansh is moving in from the highlands of central Mexico in the west and the from Huasteca in the northeast.
