The southwest to northwest patterns follow the direction of the mountain ridges formed by the folds in the earth's crust that make up this part of the eastern escarpment of the Mesa Central of Mexico. Spanish speakers are in may ways invaders of these originally Native American territories. As one can see in this map, the invasion is far from complete. It is more complete in the easily cultivated regions of the highlands to the west of this region and in the lowlands of the Southern Huasteca to the northeast. In the mountainous region that lies between these two zones the invasion has been in ecological zones that can be developed for cattle ranching.
