The Tepehua are a relatively small group that numbered only 8,702 speakers in the 1990 census. This map shows for the first time that there are two geographically distinct regions of Tepehua. The one to the west contains higher altitude villages ranging from 240m to 820m in elevation. The region to the east is at hotter lower altitudes with villages from 150m to 440m in elevation. The western group is surrounded by Otomí and Spanish speakers. In the east the Tepehua villages are surrounded mostly by Totonac villages.
