-
The Art of Problem Solving
- Report
on a conference session
on what middle school math teachers should learn in college.
-
Here is one
website on problem-solving strategies. You
will be asked to find more in an early assignment for this class, and I
will update the list at that time.
- Other math contest sites:
The Math Pentathlon (I've
gone to
their recruiting/training sessions and found them pretty interesting.
Parents can get involved, too.);
The Online Math
League (I
don't know anything about this one, nor did the people I asked;
The Math Olympiads (This is
something that starts
with fourth graders. A contact of mine at the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics says that they "have been around for years and
seem to be run fairly well", and a contact at the Mathematical
Association
of America says that "it has a good reputation; they provide 5 monthly
math quizzes");
a group that starts with fourth
graders -- The Math
League.
- a group you should join: The National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (NCTM)
- another group you should look at: The Michigan Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (MCTM). They have some good links to math and math
education sites, especially those related to Michigan (e.g., the state's
Core Curriculum for Mathematics).
- still another group you should look at: The Detroit Area Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (DACTM). They have some good activities and a newsletter.
You might want to attend their fall conference.
- history of mathematics
and biographies of mathematicians -- an excellent source. It includes
a set
of links to lots of good math sites.
- Below are the sites MTE 405 students in Fall 2000 picked to
explore and report on. They are
really nice! It's amazing how much good stuff is out there. Students in
Fall 2002 should make at least some attempt to find others, although
revisiting these may end up being your best bet.
- Below are the sites MTE 405 students in Fall 2001 picked to
explore and report on, not picked in previous years.
Again, current students should plan on trying to find something new.

- PBS Mathline,
which
they describe as "a teacher resource service of public television
utilizing the power of telecommunications to provide quality resources and
services to teachers of mathematics grades, K-12. Using a blend of
technologies including online communications and video, MATHLINE brings
the most recent advances in instructional techniques to teachers across
the country. Through participation in MATHLINE, teachers collaborate to
make important decisions about their teaching."
- see this
site about math in the movies
- visit the Mathematics
Pentathlon Web site
- visit some sites about logo and terrapin logo (several of you asked
about why we continue to teach logo in MTE 410)

found that U.S. 12th-graders' performance "was among the lowest of the
participating countries in mathematics & science general knowledge,
physics & advanced mathematics."
