Study Nursing Research in Italy
May 16th - May 29th, 2009

Announcements

  • I will use this area to post general announcements of importance to all students planning to travel to Italy.

Important Information for Potential Students

  • We will be staying at the Beautiful Hotel Quisisana. Take a look at the facilities!
  • A $500.00 non refundable deposit (check made out to OU SON Italy Trip [Account #:832182]) is due on February 15, 2008 by 5:00 pm. The deposit must be made in person (check, money order, or cash) at the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union located at 3265 Five Points Drive in Auburn Hills, MI adjacent to the university. Students are requested to ask the teller taking the deposit to make sure that their name is placed in the comment field of the receipt. A copy of the receipt should be brought to the School of Nursing and either left with the Andrea Patton [428 O'Dowd Hall] or Gary Moore [446 O'Dowd Hall]. (A minimum of 15 students are needed for the trip to proceed. If the minimum is not met, those who have made the deposit will receive their money back).
  • Balance (check made out to OU SON Italy Trip) is due by April 15, 2008 at 5:00 pm
  • You must register for NRS 452 (Scientific Inquiry 2) through the normal Oakland University registration process. Books and supplies must be purchased seperately.
  • You must have a current United States Passport (If you do not have a current US passport, further information is available on the U. S. State Department website.)
  • All breakfasts and dinners are provided . Lunch is only provided during the 6 days of class, the remainder are on your own.
  • All accommodations are double occupancy. Single occupancy is not available.
  • Students should plan to bring $500-$1000 for incidental expenses such as separate tours, shopping, and snacks.
  • Students are responsible for their own air travel arrangements (there are some suggestions below about potential sources for airline reservations)
  • Centro Ricerca e Formazione (CEREF), our hosts in Italy, will send a prepared guide in late April to assist you with preparations for the trip.
  • I would like everyone to have a cellphone to use on the trip. While purchasing seperate SIM cards is an option, it is difficult and could result in incompatibilities. I have used a company called PicCell they supply a cell phone, a charger that uses the local current, and a large number of minutes of local calls for a very reasonable price. You order online, and the cell is delivered either to your home or directly to your hotel in Italy. You just mail the cell back at the end of our trip when you return to the USA. I personally used this service last summer and found it to be extremely reliable and useful. I would like every student to have one of these phones if at all possible.
  • Early in May there will be a mandatory evening meeting with all participants to discuss details of the trip and answer any specific questions you may have.

Some Sources for Airline Reservations

  • Note that you need to arrive at Abano Terme (A suburb of Padua near Venice) on May 10, 2008. This means that you will need to leave the US on May 9, 2008 and have a return flight on May 23, 2008.
  • I would advise holding off on final purchase of airline tickets until we are sure that we have a sufficient number of participants (15). This information should be available in by the mid February. Please check back for further updates.
  • You should travel directly to the Venice (Marco Polo) Airport.
  • Side Step
  • Cheap Tickets
  • Travelocity
  • Orbitz
  • Student Universe
  • Expedia
  • Last Minute Travel
  • Northwest Airlines
  • Suburban Travel is used extensively by Oakland University for Faculty and Staff travel.
